The United Nations (UN) has launched an exciting, completely free online course on sustainable finance.
Sustainable finance, also known as sustainable or green finance, takes into account economic, environmental, and social aspects to promote sustainable development through financially conscious decisions aware of their impact.
The main objective of this course is to encourage investment in projects and companies that are environmentally responsible, socially equitable, and economically viable in the long term.
In this way, the aim is to balance economic interests with the preservation of the environment and social well-being, recognizing the interconnectedness between these aspects and their influence on financial stability.
UN Course on Finance
This course, offered by UN CC:e-Learn Courses (the UN’s educational platform), will provide you with the necessary tools to understand and apply sustainable finance.
You will delve into the basics of sustainable finance, learn about financial instruments and methodological frameworks to integrate sustainability into financial decisions, as well as become acquainted with global initiatives and regulations related to sustainable finance.
The course consists of four interactive modules:
- Sustainable Finance in Context: You will learn how sustainable finance contributes to achieving global goals regarding climate change and development.
- Fundamentals of Sustainable Finance: You will explore key concepts of sustainable finance and their relevance to actors in the financial system.
- Regulation and Self-Regulation in Sustainable Finance: You will analyze the role of regulation and self-regulation initiatives in shaping sustainable finance.
- Sustainable Financial Products: You will become familiar with different financial products, such as bonds and loans, that can provide the necessary capital to support sustainable development goals and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

To complete the course and obtain your certificate, you must pass four quizzes with a minimum score of 70% and download your certificate directly from the “Certification” page.
This course was originally developed in 2018 by Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
In 2021, the course underwent a comprehensive update thanks to the financial support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
